Hello again!!
Well, more teams have been shaken out.
Allow me to quietly shuffle over to the Bench and join Tripp, the Triple Threat.
Twins, Rays, Braves... All gone. Gone!
I really thought the Rays would be fine... whoops! Ugh.
So, as we speak, Yankees are at Texas, down 5 to nothing in the 4th inning. Yanks are up 1-0 in the series after last nights' come from behind special... that series features One of Erv's teams, facing off against one of Erv's teams... no drama there.
Tonight at 7:57 Eastern, 6:57 Central, The Giants will face Philly, in Philly, on Fox. I bet you can't wait for the vocal stylings of Tim McCarver... Heh heh.
(you have to imagine his high nasal weak voice here...)
Joe Buck: Swing and a miss, strike one on Werth...
Tim McCarver: You see Joe, when you swing at the pitch, and you MISS it, the Umpire will call a STRIIIKE, whether the pitch was actually in the strike zone or NOT...
Thank you Captain Obvious... appreciate the insight...
Kathy has Philly, and Erv has, uhh, everyone else.
Kathy is sick as a dog right now. I seriously think she oughtta fill up a fire extinguisher full of Lysol, and the next time some co-worker shows up to sit next to her in a 3 hour meeting, and the coworker is covered with slimy germs, and is more dead than alive, Kathy could just frickin' UNLOAD the fire extinguisher all over him or her.... Be a good lesson to the others to STAY THE F*CK HOME IF YOU'RE SICK!!! Stop bringing your slimy diseases into little 3 hour meetings!!!
You'd only have to do that once, right?? After that, everyone who was sick would stay home, or at least skip the meetings, for fear of being blasted with a fire extinguisher full of Lysol...
Unreal. Who are these people?!?!?
Anyways, now I'm JAFO for the pool... That would be Just Another Forking Observer.
Kathy. Erv. Good luck to both of you.
I should have cut my losses and sold Kathy the Twins when I had the chance... Oh well.
Also, let me get on record one more time and say the 5 game series is a joke. Each series must be 7 games. It must. Cut the season down to 150, and then go into 3 seven-game sets. Done and done. the Twins and Rays, those series could have been great. Instead, they were finshed before they started. Which is sad.
Enjoy!

Now it gets interesting...
Okay people, NOW, NOW is when it gets interesting....
First off, condolences to Tripp, The Triple Threat from the East Coast of Florida... He has been eliminated from the pool.
Before we feel too bad about it though, keep in mind, he did say during our draft that he liked my Tampa Bay Rays pick. Which did baffle me slightly, it was a late 4th round pick... So, A) You were right, B) Thank you, and C) Why didn't you pick them yourself??
Okay, I do feel a little bad for Tripp. The Rays, Giants, Braves, Rangers, and Reds were on the board when he stepped to the podium and selected... The Chicago Cubs. Ugh. There's a good lesson for all the young gamblers out there: stay away from the Cubs. They will leave you standing on the side of the road with a handful of dog turds, every time.
Actually, the draft thing sort of worked, in a way. The first two rounds, which I felt were critical, produced 2 playoff teams, Yankees and Phillies. The 4th and 5th rounds produced 4 playoff teams. So much for the critical 1st two rounds....
Anways, without further ado, here is your playoff slate:
October 6th, 1:30 (all times Eastern), The Texas Rangers (Erv) will play at The Tampa Bay Rays (Patrick). TBS, by the way.
October 6th, 5 PM, The Big Red Machine, The Cincinnati Reds (Erv), play at The Philadelphia Phillies (Kathy). TBS. I guarantee you Pete Rose has a dime on this game, at least....
October 6th, 830 PM, The New York Yankees (Erv), failing to win the division, will travel to Minneapolis to face The Minnesota Twins (Patrick). TBS. Let me remind the court that Kathy wanted the Twins, and I stole them from her by picking them first.
October 7th, 9:30 PM, The Atlanta Braves (Patrick) travel to the City by the Bay and face The San Francisco Giants (Erv). TBS. Whaaaa??? What were the odds on these two teams facing off in the playoffs back in March??? What could I have made?? Nevermind, don't tell me, it'll just make me sick. Besides, back in March, I wouldn't have taken San Fran with a gun to my head...
To Summarize another way, for your viewing pleasure:
Erv: New York Yankees
San Francisco Giants
Texas Rangers
Cincinnati Reds
Patrick: Minnesota Twins
Tampa Bay Rays
Atlanta Braves
Kathy: Philadelphia Phillies
Odds on favorites right now, courtesy of Bodog.net
Phillies (+150) Kathy
Yankees (+250) Erv
TB Rays (+300) Patrick
Twins (+800) Patrick
Giants (+800) Erv
(And for people who aren't gambling degenerates like me, that means the Phillies, according to bookmakers, have the best chance right now of winning the World Series, and declining chances as the list goes down. Smaller number means better chance of winning. ie, the bettor,(that could be you), wins less money if that team wins.)
Enjoy the playoffs! The regular season drags on, but I do enjoy playoff baseball. Every at bat is big, every stranded runner is big... It just has a certain intensity and emotion that is sorely lacking in the regular season, aside from a huge Yankees Red Sox series, or something...

Past the All Star Break
Welcome back, Super General Managers!!!
As I type this, St Louis is pounding the Cincinnatti Reds... a game with big NL implications.
And before I go any further, I gotta give Erv this one: Ben Sheets was placed on the DL, done for the year. I guess he was right about that one.
(Erv is chuckling, nodding his head right now....)
Anyways, lets see who has what going here.
Erv, the Super General Manager:
The Yankees, despite losing today, are leading their division.
The Diamondbacks are stinking.
The White Sox are leading their division. The Rangers are leading their division. The Reds are leading their division.
Erv is starting to look like a genius here....
Patrick:
The Angels have slipped below .500, and the Dodgers are falling behind. the Mannywood sign has been taken down. Doesn't look good in Cailfornia.
The Twins are lurking a half game back.
Tampa Bay is 2 games back of the Yankees, and may still have a shot.
Atlanta is leading their division, a shock to me, actually.
Oakland doesn't seem to have any answers for Texas, and Houston is worse than the Brewers. Nuff said.
Kathy, the Doctor of the Dugout:
The Phillies are 2 games back. I can't imagine they won't run down the Braves at some point. They're in a virtual dead heat with Erv's San Fran Giants for the wild card, as it stands this second.
Detroit has fallen below .500, and the wheels may be coming off for Jim Leyland...
The Mets, and their staggering payroll, are 9 games back of the Braves.
The Brewers need a 6 game winning streak just to get back to .500. And that seems unlikely, since we traded Jim Edmunds this afternoon.
Colorado is a few games behind... The Padres! Who lead the West!!!
The Nationals and Pirates are going nowhere.
Tripp, the Triple Threat:
The Red Sox are 6 games back, despite their impressive 64-49 record. What a brutal division.
The Cardinals are lurking, and I still would bet money they win that division.
Mariners fired Don Wakamatsu this afternoon. After you trade all the players away, is it really the manager's fault that you're losing???
The Chicago Cubs are 1-9 in their last ten tries... The Cubs annual implosion is in full bloom. Enjoy. Ahhh, like Lilacs in the spring, the Cubs August implosion is something to cherish each year... Sorry Tripp, we hate the Cubbies up here...
Not much else to say about Tripp's picks. KC and Baltimore, ouch.
Lotta baseball left to play, but at this point, Erv is looking very very strong.
The playoffs should be interesting. I think we're all gonna have a dog in the fight... We'll see how much fight is in the dog come October.

Rounding the First Quarter Pole...
Hey, Super General Managers!!! What's Up?!?!?
Alright, we're ROUGHLY a quarter of the way through the season.
Brewers fans are already having all sharp objects removed, and are being placed in straight jackets.... I was gonna say "More on that later", but let's just jump in. Last night the Twins Bashed the Brewers Brains in... Dave Bush records 1 out, ONE, gives up seven runs, and has to be lifted... Also nearly got in a brawl with the Home Plate umpire, and had to be restrained by Prince Fielder.
That pretty much sums up our starting pitching. And our bullpen is so gassed, it's not even funny.
If I'm Ken Macha, and the season is going the way it's going, I seriously would leave him out there. Leave him. I'd send Rick Peterson out there and tell him "Skipper says you're finishing the inning, even if we're still here tomorrow morning."
Yeah, Brewers are coming off a 9 game losing streak, we won one, now we're starting another losing streak. Kathy, The Doctor of the Dugout, is so thrilled.
She wanted the Twins. I got the Twins. Twins are leading their division. Nice.
I also have the Houston Astros. Thank God for the Astros. Thank You, Astros. Thank you.
Why am I thanking the Astros?? Because WITHOUT them, the Brewers would be the WORST team in the National League. Their pitching ace Roy Oswalt wants out, and is willing to waive his no-trade clause. Yikes.
Anyway, let's flip back thru the draft, see if anyone is doing anything:
Erv, the Super General Manager:
Yankees: Why did the bring Javier Vasquez back?? Didn't he prove he couldn't pitch in New York?? That's okay. At 26-16, if it wasn't for those pesky Tampa Bay Rays, The Yankees would have the best Record in the AL.
San Francisco Giants: They are above .500. Promising young staff. They are losing to my Oakland A's as we speak.
Texas Rangers: Rangers are leading the AL West, not too shabby.
Cincinnatti Reds: Reds are a half game back in the NL Central, right behind the Cardinals. They're 7-3 in their last ten. We can safely say they are a surprise.
Toronto Blue Jays: Sadly, the Blue Jays are in the AL East. They are 25-19, and would be tied (in the win column) for the lead in either of the other two AL Divisions.
Cadillac Pat:
The LA Angels are doing nothing for me. sub 500. And now all I read is that this is the year they fall apart.
The Dodgers are on a 9-1 tear of late, and are tied for the lead in the NL West with the Padres.
Could someone have mentioned to me before the draft that the owner is getting a messy divorce, and is not spending any money??? Could someone wake up Manny and give him his pills??
The Twins are leading their division.
The Rays are shocking me. Full credit to Tripp, he said he liked that pick. I'm starting to see why. Wow. Beating the Yanks. Crushing the Red Sox. Hmmm.
The Atlanta Braves are on a 4 game inning streak, but have a ways to go...
The Oakland A's aren't doing much, besides hanging around .500. Longtime A's superstar Eric Chavez has 2 bulging disks in his neck, and his career may be over. Ben Sheets has thrown 3 quality starts in his last 3 games... Only won 2, the third was a 2-1 loss given up by his bullpen...
(Erv is sticking another pin in his Ben Sheets voodoo doll right now...)
Kathy, "The Doctor of the Dugout":
Well, the Phillies are cruising. Best Record in the NL. What can you say?? The couple times I've seen them, they look great.
The Detroit Tigers are 1 game back of the Twinkies.
The Mets, with their staggering payroll, and looming expectations, are imploding. 2-8 in their last ten tries. Charlie Manuel, don't bother sending in that house payment, you're leaving soon.
Padres are tied for the lead in the West, as we discussed.
The upstart Washington Nationals are counting the days until Steven Strasburg is called up, and dominates in the Majors. They're around .500 now... They bring up Strasburg, he's everything he's supposed to be, who knows. Stay tuned.
And Tripp, the Triple Threat:
Red Sox: Is it too soon for Sox fans to push the panic button?? NO. Go ahead and panic. This team feels like a .500 team. Now, David Ortiz has started to hit again. The roids are kicking in. So, that's a good sign, but for a team that is built on getting on base and playing defense, they're defense isn't good, and they are missing that "timely hitting" ingredient....
Cardinals: I wanted the Cardinals, but Tripp got them. They are leading the central, and besides the Reds, no one is close. Nor will they be. Pujols is having a slightly down year, his OPS is "only" about 1.0... He's hitting .316. Ryan Ludwick is on an 8 game hitting streak. They'll be fine.
Mariners, ouch. Is it bad if players are asleep during games??? Or, if you have Milton Bradley, and he goes psycho?? Yeah, that's bad.
Cubs. Well, bad for Tripp, but good for Brewer fans: Cubs are melting down. Lou Piniella is unravelling before our eyes. Zambrano to the pen, and now back into the rotation. Brewer fans are drinking this in, and loving it...
Marlins, .500.
Indians, ugh!! I feel sick, where's the wastebasket...
Royals, Orioles... Excuse me....
Okay, I'm back. That was rough. Whew.
So, what have we learned???
Well, we've learned that this pool is wide open.
If you're Erv, and you have the Yankees, you love it.
If you're Patrick, and you have the Rays, you love it. (And, you're soo crazy lucky, your first 3 draft picks stink, but your 4th round Rays are tearing it up. I admit it.)
If you're Kathy, you're loving those Phillies.
If you're Tripp, you have the fundamentally sound Cardinals, and you love it.
Really, if the playoffs started right this second, it's Rays-Yanks to represent the AL, and Phillies-Cards to represent the NL. The pool is wide open.
Until next time!

The Super General Manager's Contest!!!
Welcome to the First Annual Super General Manager's Contest!!!
This will surely become legendary, but for now, we'll maintain humility and self-control.... No guarantees for the future.
(And if I need to bring it down, and stay humble, I'll just take another look at that bracket.... Ouch. Better yet, it's goin' in the fireplace....)
Now then, our draft is complete, let's review the contestants, and their teams:
Tripp, The Triple Threat
Trip had a nice draft, I thought.

I'm not a big fan of their offseason moves. Their Championships have the rich dark aroma of steriods. Their lineup has no power, in the friendly confines of Fenway... But then, they are the Red Sox.

I love this pick. I almost took them first, but thought they might still be there. I love Pujols. I love LaRussa... I love the pick. They could win the NL easily.

I'm intrigued by the Mariners. They might be better than people think. Kinda snakebit since 2001, When Lou Piniella managed the team to a 116-46 season, was named AL Manager of the Year, and was promptly swept out of the playoffs, 0-4. More on that later...

The Cubbies!!! Luckily, Tripp didn't find out that we all hate the Cubs with deep passionate vile in our hearts... Their scummy fans invade Miller Park repeatedly throughout the summer. Besides that, they have "Sweet Lou" Piniella as their manager. With the Cubs, he has made the playoffs twice, with good teams, that were favored to win, and he was swept out both times, 0-3 and 0-3. Thus, Lou is 0-10 in his last ten playoff games, skippering heavily favored teams.... Not good.
Tripp also has The Florida Marlins, the Cleveland Indians, the Kansas City Royals (ouch), and the Baltimore Orioles.
Kathy, The Doctor of the Dugout
An intriguing Draft.

A nice pick. I just don't get the Phillies, I'm not sure how they win so much, on paper I'm not impressed... but they have dominated the Brewers... Could easily win the NL.

I sorta like this pick. I think they've wildly under-achieved the last few years. If they get to June 1st above .500, look out. They picked up Damon, I like that pickup... The Yankees are not hoisting the hardware last fall without Damon. And neither are the Red Sox in '04...

Another mystery wrapped in an enigma. Not a small payroll. They've been a bitter disappointment the last couple years. If some of their guys started playing up to their contracts, they could be scary.

Ahh, the Milwaukee Brewers. In a way, it wouldn't take much for this team to explode. Rick Peterson, our new pitching coach, is somewhat of a "mad scientist", but he got a lot out of guys like Barry Zito, who far and away had their best years under Peterson. Our staff is young, they supposedly have great stuff, but they all seem to be head cases. Our lack of infield defense will MAKE a head case out of a pitcher. But if Peterson could get through to these guys, wow. Could get interesting.
Kathy also has the Colorado Rockies, the San Diego Padres, the Washington Nationals (ugh!), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (double ugh, they're breaking their own records for futility each passing season).
"Cadillac" Patrick
Hard to comment on My own draft, but here goes:

I like the Los Angeles Angels of Aneheim, of California, of the United States, of Planet Earth, of the Milky Way Galaxy. I'm not real thrilled with the Yankees and Red Sox moves in the offseason, to be honest... The Angels could represent the AL.

I like their chances. I like Joe Torre. If Manny gets on the right roids, he could be very dangerous...

Ahhh, the Twins. They signed Joe Mauer to a huge deal 24 hours after our draft... Thanks fellas. I think they're gonna get a real rude awakening in their outdoor-only ballpark in early April, freezing heir asses off playing in front of 12 frozen Minnysoda fans wearing purple Favre shirts under their parkas... oh well. Kathy wanted the Twins, I stole them from her.... come to think of it, do you want them for $5??? I could cut my losses...

The Tampa Bay Rays. Tripp seemed to like this pick, which made me feel good. Maybe being 90 miles from there, he has a better feel for the Rays... I hope he's right.
I also have the Atlanta Braves, the Oakland A's (who I quietly like a lot, I see a big Ben Sheets resurgence coming... His entire career in Milwaukee, all 7 years, I think he got like 5 runs worth of run support. No, I mean 5 TOTAL.)
(Okay, I had to throw that in, because Erv HATES Ben Sheets... And let's face it, his last outing in Spring wasn't good. Off the top of my head, it was like ten batters faced, no outs, 9 hits, ten runs... Erv may have a point. We'll see what happens when the season starts. Just sayin'...)
Anyway, I also have the Houston Astros (Ugh.)
Erv "The Super General Manager"

I may not have been real thrilled with their offseason moves. No. Without Damon and Matsui, do they win that World Series?? Nope. But, did I want to pick them?? Yes I did. Of course I did. They still have A-Rod, Jeter, Rivera...

I quietly like this pick. I'm not even sure why. Mark Reynolds and Justin Upton have signed new deals. They're setting records for attendance at their Spring Training games... That's good, right???

“As long as they don't check for Vodka and Corona, I'll be fine.”
- Ozzie Guillen, White Sox Manager, when asked about Major League Baseball administering drug tests to managers.
Heh heh. Enough said!!

Well, they have Barry Zito, that can't be bad... Can it?? I guess they wanted Joe Mauer, and are annoyed they couldn't make a deal for him. Gonna be tough, they have the Diamondbacks and the Dodgers in their division....
Erv Also has the Texas Rangers, the Cininnatti Reds (formerly known as The Big Red Machine), and the Toronto Blue Jays. The last Reds player who interested me at all was Rob Dibble... and that was a while ago...
Good luck everyone!!!
